Right-Hand Traffic in Ghana
Drive on the right ยท Overtake on the left ยท Proper lane discipline
1. Drive on the Right
- All vehicles must drive on the right side of the road.
- This rule applies on every road in Ghana โ cities, villages, and highways.
- Driving on the right ensures predictable traffic flow and prevents head-on crashes.
- Always keep to the right unless you are overtaking another vehicle.
2. Driver Position
- The driver sits on the left side of the vehicle.
- Steering wheel, pedals, and all controls are positioned for left-side driving.
- This seating gives you a better view of oncoming traffic.
- Standard for all right-hand traffic countries, including Ghana.
3. Overtaking Rules
- Always overtake on the left side of the vehicle ahead.
- Pass slower vehicles on their left โ never overtake on the right.
- After completing your overtake, safely return to the right lane.
- Before overtaking: check mirrors, signal, and ensure the road is clear for at least 100 metres.
โ ๏ธ Overtaking on the right is dangerous, illegal, and a top reason for DVLA test failure.
4. Lane Discipline
- Right lane = normal driving lane. Keep to the right at all times.
- Left lane = only for overtaking. Do not cruise or stay in the left lane.
- Driving unnecessarily in the left lane causes congestion and is against the law.
- On multi-lane roads: use the right lane for driving, left lanes only for passing.
- Always return to the right lane immediately after overtaking.
